Diary of an Insurer: Gigasure’s Ernesto Suarez

Diary of an Insurer: Gigasure's Ernesto Suarez

Ernesto Suarez, CEO of Gigasure and newly appointed co-chair of Insurtech UK, is a travel insurance innovator on a mission to keep on running, be at the cutting edge of developments, plus plan the next family adventure.

Monday

I have four children, so the mornings can be a bit chaotic as we get everyone where they need to be.

Once everyone has set off for the day I like to get out for a run. I’m a keen runner having just returned from the Sydney marathon.

For me, hitting the pavements is my way of clearing my head and setting the priorities for the week ahead.

I then have meetings with my team, checking the progress of the various projects we have running. Customer experience, technology and innovation are key for us at Gigasure so it’s important for us to be on the cutting edge of any new developments.

Tuesday

coffee meeting

After a breakfast meeting with my team, I have some calls with our partners, and potential collaborators.

Partnering with other technology providers allows us to offer our clients the valuable ‘add-ons’ that set us apart from other insurers in the market. Embracing technology innovation in this way enables us to make our insurance policies more personalised and intuitive to give our customers a greater experience.

Wednesday

Another run this morning, this time I take a route through Hyde Park and then Kensington around our office.

The ideas are flowing so as soon as I get back its straight into meetings with the team to talk about how we can execute some of these. I’m lucky to have some of the most insurance experienced professionals on my team with aligned passion and values on the need to elevate the experience for consumers.

Right now we’re looking at advancements such as generative artificial intelligence and figuring out how we can build more capabilities into our systems to help with risk assessment, climate change and forecasting.

We constantly look at our user experience and how we can make this more intuitive for our customers.

We have a good brainstorm about how we could bring these to life and make a note to check in next week to discuss progress. While speed to market is important for us, getting it right is key so we tweak and fine tune everything until we think we’ve got it right.

Thursday

I was recently appointed as co-chair of Insurtech UK and today I’m off to our monthly meeting. I’m passionate about moving insurance forward and building connections across the insurtech industry is imperative to this.

I’ve been in the industry for more than 25 years. Prior to founding Gigasure, I spent 10 years at AIG, going on to found Halo, which was later acquired by Zurich and Cover-More. I’ve seen the industry go through a sea-change in that time and I’m excited to see where the next five years will take us.

After a great meeting with lots of energy and enthusiasm in the room as we look ahead to 2026 I head back to the office to catch up on emails.

I’m hands on in the business and am very involved in every aspect from technology implementation through to marketing.

Friday

Fridays are a meeting free day to allow me to concentrate on project work. Any insurer will tell you that we can spend days buried in spreadsheets, so this is my time for focused work.

travel-2016-06

We’re currently working on some exciting product developments and new initiatives that will make our policies even more interesting for our customers. We’ll be launching some of these before the end of the year so watch this space.

It’ll come as no surprise that as a travel insurance expert, I also love to travel.

I spend my evening working on the itinerary for our next family adventure. As my children get older their requests for destinations and experiences get more extreme.

With various requests for adrenalin fuelled adventures alongside the need for Instagram moments, finding places that will suit everyone becomes more challenging as they get older but I am enjoying every moment.
