Throwback Thursday: Churchill’s pet plan

Throwback Thursday

Insurance Post’s Throwback Thursday steps back in time to March 1996 to remind you what was going on this week in insurance history when Churchill was hoping to buy Petplan.

28 March 1996: Churchill’s Petplan ambition

Thirty years ago Churchill was in advanced talks to buy the UK’s biggest pet insurer Petplan.

Insurance Post reported a successful deal would start another chapter in the growth of Churchill, founded by the Swiss Winterthur Group in 1989.

The deal would also mark the end of 20 years of independence for Petplan, the brainchild of Patsy Bloom who started the business from scratch in 1976.

However the talks failed to result in a takeover.

Instead, it was acquired by Cornhill a few months later and is currently part of Allianz.
