Penny Black’s Social Diary: Hiscox's stock market fanfare

Hiscox reaches milestone anniversary

Hiscox ‘unlocking progress’ celebrations

When insurers present themselves at the London Stock Exchange for major milestones, embracing the thrill of the digitised bell, it is quite like a corporate vow renewal – a recommitment to financial success.

Hiscox, when it marked 125 years of risk-embracing bliss, was no exception with colleagues, senior leaders, and group CEO Aki Hussain attending the affair.

Hussain said both the insurer, like the risk landscape, is changing faster than ever but at the same time, is staying true to its past values.

If that is not a vow-renewal statement, then what is?

However, what I would gladly raise a glass of champagne to is to any business which has achieved decades or centuries of operation. Go big on the anniversaries or go home, I say.

Food good enough for the big game

Sausage rolls

The British Insurance Brokers’ Association Journalist and Media Awards always deserves praise for being held in the daytime, reducing the risk of bags appearing under Penny’s eyes.

This year many compliments were given to the food at the afterparty at One Under Lime.

The cuisine on offer, primarily burgers and pizzas, followed the simple snacks at the actual awards, including the on-the-side sausage rolls, pictured.

Plentiful at best and perhaps a bit stodgy at worse, I liked the sausage rolls but did not go back for another mini burger, perhaps a bit wilted in the heatwave sun. 3 ½ stars.

Out of context

“I am a virgin at this.”

Michelle Taylor, broker distribution director of Aviva, declares she’s “made it through the wilderness” to judge this year’s British Insurance Brokers’ Association Journalist and Media Awards, where she presented the Insurance Post Podcast with the Best Digital or Broadcast Award.

Throwback Thursday: Female first; Co-op’s woe

Insurance Post’s Throwback Thursday steps back in time to August 1971 to remind you what was going on this week in insurance history when a woman first entered a male building safety arena and Co-operative Insurance’s results were disappointing.
