Throwback Thursday: Men belt up; Salaries rise
Insurance Post’s Throwback Thursday steps back in time to August 1971 to remind you what was going on this week in insurance history when the government told men to “belt up”.
26 August 1971: Men told to “belt up”
Eldon Griffiths, parliamentary under-secretary of state for the Department of the Environment, urged “women to nag their husbands and boyfriends to fasten their seatbelts when driving”.
Far too many male motorists, he said, were deaf to appeals to them to wear safety belts the law made them provide in their cars.
Post’s reporter added: “This is sound advice but we think that far too many women motorists are also offenders.”
Post has clearly been fighting for equality since at least the 1970s.
Insurance salaries outpace inflation
Salaries of clerical and management grades of staff in the insurance industry increased by an average of 11.8% in the first six months of 1971, compared with 10.8% in the same period of 1970.
This was according to a survey by Lloyd’s Executive Selection, which cited inflation and union activity as the two main reasons for the uptick in salaries plus “young men are more cost-of-living conscious than before”.
The estimated increase in consumer prices for the year 1971 was said to be 14.4%.
