Mark Greenwood, regional director Asia-Pacific at the Chartered Insurance Institute, urged delegates at the Claims Club Asia in Shanghai to embrace professional development.

Greenwood, speaking at the Shanghai World Financial Centre at the inaugural Claims Club Asia in China, reminded an audience of 50 Chinese claims managers the importance of building a sector the public can trust.

He said: "Only one in 25 people trust the insurance industry. If the public is to trust its expertise the only way they can do that is by you demonstrating it. Continued professional development is therefore extremely important."

Greenwood, based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, added: "Insurance needs to be a sector you feel proud of. In addition to having a regulator and code of ethics, trust in your expertise is the other cornerstone of developing a profession."

Also speaking at the event were Jack Jia, partner, EY; Chloe Zhou, manager of Hong Kong office, MDD and Tommy Kang, regional managing director for Greater China, Belfor.
