How to secure a career in loss adjusting

How to exit school, enter the loss adjusting industry and swiftly climb the sector’s ranks is covered by John Toms, senior loss adjuster, in his Insurance Post Top Tips video.

Toms recommends:

  • Get work experience.
  • Achieve Chartered Insurance Institute and Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters qualifications.
  • Continue to learn.

Loss adjusting is a great career, Toms said, adding it is part of the insurance industry where no matter what your passion, you can be encouraged to specialise, get a career track to follow and yet shape your own future based on your interests.

He said: “It is not a one size fits all. The ability to continue to learn something and become qualified in it is absolutely immense.

“There are many loss adjusters who are multi-qualified as adjusters, Chartered insurance practitioners, surveyors and engineers.

“The ability to say I am going to choose this niche, qualify in it and specialise I would argue is different from most other insurance roles.”
