14 December: Wii wish you a merry Christmas

14-dec

The launch of the Wii computer console was declared a revolution in the video gaming world. It hasn’t been received so well by the insurance industry.

For those who are not familiar, the Wii's signature feature is the Wii remote controller, which uses infrared detection and accelerometers with its buttons. Gamers swing a controller in front of the screen, making the Wii a console that works on actual physical activity.

However, this new type of gaming hasn't been without its teething problems. When first launched, over-enthusiastic gamers, keen to win their bout against their latest rival, often lost their grip on the Wii remotes, launching them into TV sets, causing an average of £1000 damage per claim.

This problem was rectified with the introduction of a wristband that attaches the remote to the user's hand, so that even if they do lose their grip, the remote won't cause damage to other household items - or spectators - much to the relief of the nation's insurers.
