2011-09-28-post-inn-final-42

Post senior reporter Amy Ellis outlines this week's major general insurance stories including the appointment of Cathie Bruce to the newly created role of commercial managing director at UK General.

UK General MD Michael Warren said that the commercial business currently accounts for 10% of its gross written premium. The company hopes to mimic the success in its Rural Insurance business with the hire of Simon Stevens as managing director in March this year.

In other news: brokers have hit out at loss adjusters for desktopping claims and using inexperienced staff to cut costs; the managing director of Affinity Select Insurance Services has set her sights on ranking amongst the UK's top 50 brokers within 10 years by launching into a variety of what she classes as untapped niche markets; fraud investigators at leading insurers have attributed the unprecedented number of high-profile fraudsters hauled before the courts over the past month to a more advanced industry-wide detection process; and Zurich claims fraud and investigations manager Scott Clayton said the perceived upsurge in fraud prosecutions has come as no surprise to fraud experts who have been carrying out painstaking investigations for up to five years in a bid to bring insurance cheats to justice.
