Penny Black’s Social Diary: Insurtech UK’s specs-appeal

Social Diary

Penny Black has been out and about again, notebook in one hand and canapé in the other, keeping a keen eye on the insurance industry’s more whimsical moments.

Insurtech UK’s shades

Pimm’s is the secret weapon of the British summer party: deceptively sweet, surprisingly potent, and entirely appropriate for Insurtech UK’s latest gathering.

Held on the terrace at Browne Jacobson, the trade body used the occasion to launch its investment guide before guests turned their attention to networking in the London heat.

Sunglasses

As conversations turned to artificial intelligence, investment and the future of insurance, new alliances were forged between attendees sporting everything from sharp suits to shorts.

Drinks were kept topped up, legal professionals mingled with founders and investors, and the chatter flowed well into the evening – a reminder that insurtech is as much about relationships as technology.

The fetching white sunglasses handed out during the evening certainly completed the look, although Penny Black suspects not everyone can carry them off as well as she can.

It’s far easier to debate insurers’ environmental credentials when you don’t have a piece of chicken trapped in your teeth.

Thankfully, the plant-based lunch served at the UN Environment Programme’s London Climate Action event at Bush House was entirely in keeping with the occasion, delivering on both sustainability and flavour.

The rice crackers were an unexpected highlight, while the vegetable pakoras comfortably earned a second helping. Four-and-a-half stars.

Out of Context

“Has anyone rented here? Has anyone been a renter?”

Eddy Castles, managing director at Willis Towers Watson, addressing a room full of journalists while presenting the Best Newcomer Award at the British Insurance Brokers’ Association Awards in Lloyd’s Old Library. Penny Black suspects rather more hands could have gone up than did.

Throwback Thursday: Female first; Co-op’s woe

Insurance Post’s Throwback Thursday steps back in time to August 1971 to remind you what was going on this week in insurance history when a woman first entered a male building safety arena and Co-operative Insurance’s results were disappointing.
