Penny Black’s Social Diary: Crawford’s wind; Zurich’s golfing prowess

Social Diary

Penny Black is back, sharing the tittle-tattle she overheard at insurance industry events, reviewing the quality of buffets at conferences, and giving a thumbs up – or down – to the sector’s social media posts.

Gust of glam in Copenhagen

Still nursing a canapé hangover from the insurance industry’s endless fizz-fuelled mingling, I nearly choked on my oat flat white when I thought I spotted Charlotte Ainsworth, senior manager at Crawford Forensic Accounting Services, announcing she had wind. Quelle horreur!

But fear not, darlings – it turns out the ever-elegant Ainsworth was simply touching down at Wind Europe conference in blustery Copenhagen, not suffering the after-effects of last night’s vol-au-vents. Phew.

She was all set for a whirlwind of panels, power lunches and possibly a puff of Baltic breeze.

One thing’s for certain: where there’s wind, there’s power – and we’re totally here for it even if her post proved I should have gone to Specsavers. Penny and Insurance Post ❤️ wind (and all the other renewables, too).

Penny’s Lunch Box

Cila lunch

The Chartered Institute of Loss Adjuster’s President’s Lunch saw waistlines expanded with a dash of spice. The starter was a delicately seasoned shredded chicken and feta filo parcel while the claims industry was served a halibut biryani for main. The lunch proved loss adjusters can handle a little risk – at least when it comes to lightly spiced quinoa rice. Four stars, as the portions could have been mightier.

Out of context

“I like playing golf when I’ve got time, but I don’t have much time. I’m not particularly good, but I’m fast enough to go around the course. So, I think that’s good enough.”

But has Drazen Jaksic, CEO of Zurich UK, got time for Penny’s favourite version of the great game – Crazy Golf – anytime soon? Penny won’t let that giant windmill prevent her from getting a hole in one.

Should the UK follow the UAE’s qualifications lead?

Matthew Connell, director of policy and public affairs at the Chartered Insurance Institute, considers whether the UK should follow the United Arab Emirates' lead and define competence according to a holistic, professionally-designed syllabus rather than rely on a list of bullet points in the Financial Conduct Authority's rule book?
