Looking back 30 years: Cricket bucks sports club claims trend

Post 30 years ago

Some insurers have stopped writing personal accident business for sports clubs, in view of poor claims experience.

Often however, such experience stems from certain sports. Cricket is generally looked upon as a relatively good risk in this respect.

This year, General Accident is keeping its rates at the same level for its amateur cricket accident insurance, but has increased the unit of benefit. Now, the standard benefits, for any player aged 16 or over, are £2000 for the loss of one or more limbs or their sight in one or both eyes, and £20 per week for temporary total disablement — excluding the first week.

The premium is £16 per annum per team. The capital sum can be increased to £3000 and the weekly benefit to £30, with a 50% increase in the premium. General Accident is saying that, as an optional extra, for £1 per team it will cover damage to dentures and spectacles — up to £40 per player — occurring during club play.
