ACSO director Matthew Maxwell-Scott passes away

Maxwell-Scott, pictured, who ran for parliament as a Conservative candidate in the 2015 and 2017 elections, passed away of a heart attack at the weekend.

He leaves his wife Mel, and two sons.

Career

Having spent seven years as executive director for ACSO, Maxwell-Scott spent his career as a voice standing up for those who may have been overlooked.

He was a regular speaker around issues relating to the Whiplash reforms and the more recent Mazur ruling.

Prior to his role at ACSO, Maxwell-Scott had been a director of Access to Justice, as part of the pressure group working to protect injured people’s rights.

Before that, he built his career on speechwriting, having worked at RSA (now Intact) as a speechwriter for the CEO at the time.

Earlier this year, ACSO launched a sister body, called the Consumer Legal Association.

The aim for this body was to promote the positive impact of the “£5.5bn-plus claimant legal industry” on the lives of consumers, as well as championing the careers of the tens of thousands of people it employs.

Law firms such as Minster Law, Slater and Gordon, and Fletchers have backed it, with senior figures joining the CLA’s board.

David Whitmore, chair of the CLA said: "It is with profound sadness that we have to share that Matthew passed away suddenly at the weekend.

"Matthew was a highly respected and highly popular figure throughout the consumer legal industry and beyond. A champion of consumer rights and access to justice, he was a persuasive and energetic voice in Westminster and beyond with his work for the Association of Consumer Support Organisations and, latterly, as the CEO of our organisation.

"We have all lost a friend and a colleague who still had so much more to achieve but our thoughts right now are with his wife, his two sons and family for whom this loss will be far greater. They have lost a devoted husband, a proud father and a loving family man.

"RIP Matthew. We will miss you terribly."
