Diary of an Insurer: NFU Mutual’s James Trevis

James Trevis diary

When he isn’t deep in strategy meetings shaping the future of cyber insurance for SMEs, James Trevis, NIS portfolio manager and cyber specialist at NFU Mutual, is out on his bike, enjoying a drink with friends, or travelling with in his campervan.

Monday

Fresh from a weekend in Wales celebrating seven years of marriage, I return recharged for a week of strategic focus.

Monday kicks off with internal meetings on our wholesale business and the evolving cyber landscape.

These sessions are vital for aligning our portfolio with market demands and ensuring our solutions stay relevant and resilient.

The evening is low-key – Netflix, a bit of sofa time, and easing back into the rhythm.

Tuesday

A full day in London with key insurer partners, where we refine exclusive wordings tailored to our customer base.

It’s a great example of how bespoke solutions can add real value. Back home, I jump on the turbo trainer for Zwift Race League.

I’ve entered the A league for the first time – racing against 65 others. Mid-pack finish. Ambitious? Definitely. Realistic? Possibly not. But it’s all part of the fun.

Wednesday

A quieter day, which is rare but welcome. I catch up on emails, plan training sessions, and hold development reviews with key team members.

Investing in people and taking time to reflect is just as important as the high-energy days it’s what builds long-term capability.

The evening involves a short gym session followed by a well-deserved takeaway with Donna. Balance, right?

Thursday

Off to Broker Expo in Birmingham, a brilliant opportunity to connect with suppliers and stay ahead of market trends.

Artificial intelligence is the hot topic, especially its potential to transform service and claims.

It’s clear this conversation is only just beginning. The evening brings a night out with friends, where the chat inevitably turns to sport (cycling) – none of us take it too seriously, but we’re not quite ready to hang up our cleats either.

Friday

I wrap up the week by recording a podcast with customers on directors’ cyber risk, a topic gaining traction as board-level accountability becomes more prominent.

Helping SMEs understand and manage these risks is one of the most rewarding parts of the role.

With that, it’s time to wind down and maybe squeeze in another Zwift session though I might stick to the B league.

We’re planning a Saturday escape to the Peak District for some countryside air and a bit of van life.

I’ll spend Friday evening quietly trying to fit the bike into the van’s garage without Donna noticing. Wish me luck.
