Amazon criticised for trying to 'poach' Lemonade staff

A shark fin in the water

Amazon is attempting to poach staff of insurance start-up Lemonade with "obscene" amounts of money, the CEO of Lemonade claims.

Shai Wininger, CEO of Lemonade, wrote a post on LinkedIn calling out at Amazon for damaging the “entire market” with its overtures.

Wininger’s post follows rumours that Amazon is on a recruitment drive for insurance professionals within the UK market.

“Just learned that Amazon is actively targeting and trying to poach Lemonade Inc employees,” Wininger said in the post.

The CEO also said that the company would be reconsidering its existing business relationship with Amazon Web Services the cloud computing provider.

“I wonder if that’s their idea of supporting the startup ecosystem,” said Winniger. ”Reconsidering Amazon AWS.”

He added: “It makes sense because companies like Lemonade spend millions in cloud services with them and trust them with their business. Poaching employees from their customers is a breach of confidence. But it doesn’t end there.

“The way they do it is by offering candidates obscene amounts of money which confuse even the most loyal employee, not to mention the damage this causes to the entire market. Amazon needs to decide where it stands, and it needs to happen fast.”
