The system of general average goes back to before the days of marine insurance and the York-Antwerp Rules date from 1860, so it is no surprise they have undergone something of an overhaul. Eric Alexander examines the substantial insurer savings likely to spring from the latest rule changes

With all the other pressures upon them, general average may not be at the forefront of marine underwriters' minds but new rules for dealing with it - which will become available for use from 1 January
