Penny Black’s Social Diary: CII lounge with a legacy

Social Diary

Penny Black has been out and about again, notebook in one hand and canapé in the other, keeping a keen eye on the insurance industry’s more whimsical moments.

CII’s lounge with legacy
Caruth Lounge

The family of the late Brian Caruth recently gathered at the Chartered Insurance Institute’s relatively new Old Broad Street offices to open the Caruth Lounge, a space for members to work, meet, or simply pause between the industry’s many obligations.

Caruth devoted more than three decades to the Insurance Institute of Northern Ireland, was president from 2018 to 2019 and later served as the CII’s Vice President for Local Institutes.

The guest list for the opening reflected the breadth of his influence: CII Group president Callum Beaton, vice president for local institutes Alex Clegg, and representatives from the Insurance Institute of Northern Ireland, including Fiona Cambridge and Les Gillanders.

Beaton noted naming a members’ space after Caruth was a “lasting tribute” to the enthusiasm he brought to the role.

And that, ultimately, is the point. A lounge is just furniture and floor space until it carries a story. This one now does.

Before anyone says it: yes, you have seen this gingerbread man before.

Insurtech gingerbread

Insurtech UK has once again produced its signature biscuit offering. This time, we are told, it is new: an updated jumper, a fresh batch, a reimagining for modern tastes.

It is still a gingerbread man, although with the same great taste. Four stars.

Out of context

Rory Yates, who now runs his own consultancy Quantum Axis, reveals spinal compression sports mean he isn’t quite as tall as he once was.
