Throwback Thursday: London Institute’s growth plan

Throwback Thursday

Insurance Post’s Throwback Thursday steps back in time to May 1981 to remind you what was going on this week in insurance history when the London Insurance Institute wanted to grow.

21 May 1981: London Institute’s recruitment campaign

The Insurance Institute of London announced plans to launch a recruitment campaign, in a bid to strengthen ties with Lloyd’s.

The London institute then had a membership of 12,000, a quarter of the Chartered Insurance Institute’s membership.

President Pat Bartrum said while membership numbers had remained stable, there was scope for further growth.

In order to increase attendance at the main Monday meetings at the CII’s HQ, Aldermanbury, experimental changes were planned for the winter.

The meetings would be renamed President’s Lectures and would start at 5.45pm to meet the needs of those working in Lloyd’s.

Bartrum also plugged a dinner at the Guildhall to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the institute.

Today the Insurance Institute of London is the largest local institute of the CII, boasting more than 25,000 members.
