Penny Black’s Social Diary: Markerstudy’s feast; ISC’s balloons

Social Diary

Penny Black is back, sharing the tittle-tattle she overheard at insurance industry events, reviewing the quality of buffets at conferences and giving a thumbs up – or down – to the sector’s social media posts.

Marching orders

Melissa Collett, CEO of Insurtech UK, posted on LinkedIn about participating in the Lady Mayor’s Show, celebrating Dame Susan Langley becoming the 697th mayor and the first Lady Mayor of the City of London.

Collett marched alongside a formidable contingent of 697 City women, including insurance sector leaders. The purple ISC Group balloons and her infectious smile made her post stand out among the many on my LinkedIn feed celebrating Dame Susan.

The hashtag #StrongWomenStrongFuture certainly captures the mood. Though I do wonder if anyone’s legs were as sore the next day as mine would have been. Three miles is quite a trek in formal wear.

Penny’s Lunch Box

A table with plates of bao buns, edamame, prawns and chicken.

Markerstudy’s pre-Christmas drinks and activity evening were a welcome reminder that sometimes a mostly beige spread is best, as long as you get enough variety in there.

With bao buns, prawns, edamame, sliders, chips, samosas, chicken and gyozas featured, it was quite the feast. A much-needed one too as the Insurance Post team worked up quite the appetite doing physical challenges at The Cube by Canary Wharf.

I was delighted watching both Markerstudy colleagues and invited journalists fit as much of the spread as they could onto one plate and then return for seconds. The food mountains consumed speak for themselves. Five stars.

Out of context

“Before you get your hopes up, I can’t sing.”

Hannah Gurga, director general of the Association of British Insurers, dashes the trade body’s members’ hopes that she was the follow-up act to the youth choir that kicked off the annual dinner.
