Penny Black’s Social Diary: Insurtech UK’s pizza; Clearspeed’s sunglasses

Social Diary

Penny Black is back, sharing the tittle-tattle she overheard at insurance industry events, reviewing the quality of buffets at conferences and giving a thumbs up – or down – to the sector’s social media posts.

Bring your dad to work day

You often hear about parents bringing their children to work with them to get them some experience but you rarely hear about the offspring having their parents tag along.

SSP Broker managing director Martyn Mathews’s LinkedIn post offered this role reversal sharing his experience being hosted in parliament by Dave Robertson, MP for Lichfield, Burntwood and the Villages, who had offered his daughter Amelia (aptly nicknamed mini-Mathews) work experience.

Mathews cheekily mentioned he took the opportunity to talk about the drive to include insurance literacy in the national curriculum. Step aside nepo babies… nepo parents may be the next big thing!

Quite on theme with Amelia’s nickname, another mini feature in today’s column is the mini vegetable pizza served at Insurtech UK and McKinsey’s networking drinks.

I’m quite a fan of bite-sized food and the pizza did not disappoint. However, it was the only part of the spread I enjoyed. The smoked salmon and lamb kofta weren’t nearly as exciting. Three stars.

Out of context

“I was tempted to put my sunglasses on.”

Manjit Rana, executive vice-president of insurance at Clearspeed, nearly commits the social faux pas of wearing sunglasses indoors due to the blinding sunlight coming through the floor-to-ceiling windows of McKinsey’s office.
