How Insurance Post’s Best Insurance Employer List 2023 was produced

three-stars

Each year, Insurance Post asks thousands of employees working across the insurance sector to rate their employer.

This year saw the biggest response yet, with more than 4000 responses from insurance employees at all levels, from entry-level to C-suite.

More than 140 insurers, brokers and MGAs were nominated across two categories, small to medium employers (SMEs) as well as large employers.

The winners in each category are announced at the 2023 British Insurance Awards, which took place at the Royal Albert Hall on 5 July.

The Best Insurance Employer survey covers benefits, pay and development, as well as company values, such as commitment to ESG, diversity and work-life balance.

In each category, employees are asked to rate their employer out of 10.

If the employer receives enough nominations, a combination of employee ratings is used to determine the firm’s final score, and how many stars they achieve out of a possible five.

The large firms and SMEs that managed to achieve three stars or more feature in Insurance Post’s Best Insurance Employers list for 2023.

To gain ‘star’ status in this year’s list, employers had to score highly across all areas.

This was worked out by achieving at least 8.75 across:

  1. Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion
  2. Commitment to environmental, social and corporate governance
  3. Pay and benefits
  4. Senior management
  5. Training and development
  6. Work/life balance

Secondly, a further star was awarded for gaining at least 8.75 based on whether the employee was willing to recommend the company to a friend.

A third star was gained across nine areas for a score of at least 8.75 based on commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion across the following areas:

  1. Gender
  2. Race and ethnicity
  3. Socioeconomic background
  4. Neurodiversity
  5. LGBTQ+
  6. Religion or belief
  7. Age
  8. Pregnancy and maternity
  9. Menopause

A fourth star was awarded for a score of at least 8.75 based on support given by the employer in connection to the cost-of-living crisis.

Finally, a fifth star was earned from a score of at least 8.75 based on how the individual rated their company overall as the best to work for.
