Penny Black’s Social Diary: Thomas Carroll’s cricketing; Hardy’s Hammers

Social Diary

Penny Black has been out and about once again, notebook in one hand and canapé in the other, keeping tabs on the insurance industry’s more entertaining sidelines.

Thomas Carroll bowls one over the competition

Thomas Carroll’s Douglas Spencer

While insurers are often accused of playing a straight bat, Thomas Carroll has gone all in on cricket by sponsoring the South Wales Premier Cricket League.

The league brings together the top 20 clubs from across South Wales, offering a fiercely competitive stage for some of the region’s strongest cricketing talent.

The sponsorship comes hot on the heels of Thomas Carroll’s director of sales operations, Douglas Spencer, being appointed chair of the league.

Spencer becomes only the second chairperson in the competition’s 17-year history – proof that patience isn’t just a virtue in the game of cricket, but apparently a prerequisite for governance of the sport too.

Cricket has long been Spencer’s game. His journey began in junior cricket at Abergavenny before progressing through the senior ranks at several clubs, including Halesowen in the Birmingham and District League, eventually settling at Usk.

Greg Edwards, sales director at Thomas Carroll, said: “We’re very proud to support the South Wales Premier Cricket League and are equally delighted to see Douglas appointed as Chair.

“Knowing his passion for the game and the amount of time and commitment he has already dedicated to cricket over many years, he will bring tremendous energy and vision to the role.”

Penny’s Lunch Box

A tip of the hat to Brit for restoring a cherished conference tradition: the bacon butty.

Appearing on the exhibition floor on the final day of the British Insurance Brokers’ Association conference in Manchester, the simple yet effective combination of white bread, bacon and red sauce proved exactly what many weary delegates required after several days of relentless networking.

Five stars for hangover-curing capabilities. Three stars for presentation.
