Throwback Thursday: Biba’s talent help
Insurance Post’s Throwback Thursday steps back in time to September 1981 to remind you what was going on this week in insurance history when the British Insurance Brokers’ Association responded to demand from members for help with “personnel matters.”
10 September 1981: Biba advises on employment law
The British Insurance Brokers’ Association launched a programme of meetings and seminars covering fair and unfair dismissal, sick pay provision and industrial tribunals.
Keith Lathrope, chairman of Biba’s personnel management committee, said: “Members make constant use of our Employment Law Digest, which provides a summary of current employment legislation for day-to-day reference.
“The Biba technical services secretariat is always available to answer detailed questions and give general guidance on personnel matters to member firms.”
Fire riot damage
The cost of fire damage in Great Britain in July 1981 was £25m, according to the British Insurance Association.
The trade body stated £4.5m of that total was due to riots in various parts of the country.
In June and July 1981, Britain experienced major riots, notably in Liverpool, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester following earlier unrest in Brixton in London in April.
These events were fuelled by racial tension, poverty, high unemployment, and perceived police discrimination, particularly concerning “stop and search” tactics.
