DWF Law’s Paul Berry passes away
DWF Law partner, and Insurance Post's Claims and Fraud Achievement Award winner, Paul Berry has passed away.
A pioneer of the of the claims space, Berry had dedicated more than 35 years of service to the industry.
Rising from junior solicitor, Berry joined joined DWF in 1989. Two years later, he was named as a partner.
He went on to hold a number of senior roles, including CEO of DWF Law’s Insurance Services business and as a member of its executive board.
As CEO, he had a large role to play in the firm that grew from a two partner regional interest to a global business with turnover exceeding £350m.
His career achievements were recognised at Post’s Claims and Fraud Awards last year, where he was handed the Achievement Award.
Berry, pictured, had been diagnosed with stage four terminal cancer, so was unable to receive his award in person.
However, long-standing colleague and DWF co-founder Jim Davies spoke passionately about his achievements in his absence following an extended standing ovation.
Tributes
DWF announced Berry’s passing in a post on LinkedIn. It said: “With great sadness we share the news that our friend and colleague, Paul Berry, has passed away.
“He pioneered the use of data analytics in claims handling, helping insurers make better decisions quicker. Paul also built a cutting-edge global fraud legal team and led DWF’s expansion into new markets.”
Jim Davies said: “I cannot think of a partner who has contributed more to the success of the firm than Paul.”
Peers from the industry and beyond have passed on their condolences in the comments section.
Matthew Doughty, group CEO of DWF called it “a very sad day”.
He commented: “Paul’s influence on our business over more than three decades really can’t be overstated. He was a vital figure in helping us to become the firm we are today.
“A one of a kind who will be dearly missed.”
Andrew Leaitherland, founder and CEO of Arch.Law said Berry “had a remarkable way of seeing things from everyone’s perspective and finding a way to somehow keep everyone happy and together which made him a legend as a board member and a partner”.
Post echoes the sentiments made, and sends its condolences to Paul’s wife, children, grandchildren and to anyone who had the privilege of working with him.
Rest in peace, Paul.
