Penny Black’s Social Diary: Crawford’s curry and ABI’s meaty fare

Social Diary

Penny Black is back, sharing the tittle-tattle she overheard at insurance industry events, reviewing the quality of buffets at conferences and giving a thumbs up – or down – to the sector’s social media posts.

Shiny Disco Balls

I love a shiny disco ball, so Yasmin Van Der Veen, account executive at Marsh Commercial’s LinkedIn post about the Chartered Insurance Institute Young Members’ Committee Winter Ball 2024, certainly warrants a thumbs-up.

However, I was left wondering – where was my invite? Is it my age that prohibits my attendance? Did the invite get lost in the post? Like Insurance Post, I was first “issued” in 1840, making me more than 180 years old.

As an old broad, I am happy to have missed out on the 360 Photo Booth. I don’t believe spinning and socialising should mix.

At Crawford Technical Claims Forum in London at the end of November, I was more than happy to wait in line for this curry. This claims management company’s spicy approach to satisfying my stomach’s needs should be applauded. Five stars.

Out of context

“We’re known for our meat and two veg.” Malcolm Tarling, former chief media relations officer of the Association of British Insurers, agrees the trade body is well respected for consistently serving up a decent main dish for the annual dinner.
