At the start of this year, Post exclusively revealed that Admiral struck a deal with Google Cloud, which will see the technology giant host the provider’s policy management and billing platforms plus use generative artificial intelligence to produce new products and services.

The tie-up between the motor insurance giant and a company so big that it has a brand name that is now a verb came hot on the heels of Hiscox AI Laboratories teaming up with Google Cloud’s generative AI technology to automate lead algorithmic underwriting from submission to quote.

Chatter about how Google is going to transform insurance is finally turning into action is why former Deloitte Digital partner Nigel Walsh, who was hired to lead the internet giant’s insurance business in 2021, has leapt from 17th place on last year’s Insurance Post Power List to fifth place in 2024.

In a LinkedIn post at the start of this year, Walsh wrote: “There has never been a better time to enable an industry drive change, making Google the number one destination for insurance transformation over the next decade.

“In an industry where we manufacture nothing but data, [there is] no point being anywhere but the undisputed industry leader.”

The former head of UK insurance at Capgemini, who is now global head of Google’s insurance efforts, said he “could not be more excited” as the “pace of change with technology and specifically AI has never been so exhilarating and relevant to an industry”.

With Walsh at the helm of global insurance for Google Cloud, expect to hear about more insurers partnering with Google Cloud in the coming months.
