Since its publication in March, the Mactavish report has attracted significant interest and was a frequent topic of conversation at last week's Association of Insurance & Risk Managers' conference. It produced some dramatic headlines with the contention that the "financial backdrop insurance provides for business is unreliable and becoming more so" and "the prevailing model of insurance buying is deeply flawed".

Away from the headlines, the report makes some insightful comments and practical recommendations and we, as an industry, need to act on these. Where it has been less helpful is in its claim that
