Your say: An ethical duty to tackle fraud

fraud-clippings

It was curious that two Post articles last week included comments about the potential downside of tackling application fraud.

Tom Cooper (The return of motor madness) and Andy Pagett (Slow steps in an industry-wide challenge) both highlighted the possibility of an adverse financial and commercial impact should a significant number of policies be rejected or cancelled because data checks indicate something suspicious.

My response to this is to urge insurers not to lose their nerve. Intermediaries have come a long way and, in some cases, there are very sophisticated measures in place. Let's give brokers time to demonstrate their worth before making any knee-jerk decisions.

As Andy says, it is vital that intermediaries are open and collaborative on application fraud. Part of this means reassuring partners that the measures are not about turning away valuable bona fide customers.

The fraud rings and fake policies we need to identify could never provide lucrative business for brokers or insurers.

And, quite apart from our desire to deliver quality business to our insurer partners, when ghost brokers are taking out 40 or more false policies against a single, innocent customer's address it is our ethical duty to step in.
