Fire engine action averts flood loss
The Royal Lancashire Agricultural Society's Show Grounds at Southport received a severe damper in the early hours of Saturday last. From 2am to 4am the rain fell in torrents, with the result that practically the whole show-ground was waterlogged. The Merryweather fire engines, which were on the ground as safeguards against fire, had an opportunity of displaying their powers in another direction. They pumped the water from the flooded ring and, after about six hours' operation, succeeded in draining it sufficiently to allow of the afternoon's programme proceeding.
