Throwback Thursday: RAC and Eagle Star clash
Insurance Post’s Throwback Thursday steps back in time to July 1996 to remind you what was going on this week in insurance history when an insurer was accused of poaching customers.
25 July 1996: RAC and Eagle Star clash
RAC Insurance was taking legal advice to prevent its former panel insurers from leading a mass exodus of its policyholders.
RAC had recently started offering Guardian Direct quotes at renewal time, rather than pushing motorists towards it’s former 20-strong panel.
Eagle Star, which had 10,000 customers from RAC, however asked broker Premium Search to make renewal offers.
RAC argued Eagle Star could be in breech of data protection laws, insisting the policyholders were its own rather than the insurer’s.
Nigel Richardson, compliance and motor schemes manager for RAC Insurance, said: “It has certainly not been done with our sanction and blessing. We maintain they are our clients’ policies.”
