Q&A with Adam Winslow, CEO of Direct Line Group
What has been the biggest challenge your company has faced in 2024?
Recognising and acknowledging the missteps that have taken place over the past few years.
In July, I explained to investors and colleagues that Direct Line Group had become a complex organisation and technology structure, with limited speed and efficiency in what is a commoditised fast-moving market.
To remedy the position we found ourselves in, we’ve decided to simplify our business model to ensure a leaner organisational structure with clear end-to-end accountability.
We’re refocusing our efforts on the core insurance capabilities we need to succeed.
Our clear ambition is to do fewer things better where we’ll focus our investments in order to succeed.
What has been your company’s greatest achievement in 2024?
Four months after arriving as CEO I announced a refreshed strategy with the objective of establishing Direct Line Group as the customers’ insurer of choice and delivering profitable growth at a well-received Capital Markets Day for investors and analysts.
We took the decision to launch our Direct Line brand on price comparison websites with new motor insurance products, expanding our reach and offering more convenience for our customers.
In September, we announced our half-year results and reported strong premium growth and a return to profitability for motor, which is a significant milestone.
Direct Line Group of course offers more than just motor products and services.
Our home, commercial direct (SME) and Green Flag (rescue) businesses delivered above target premium growth and attractive margins.
In addition, our solvency capital ratio improved during the first half of the year to a strong 200% pre-dividend, which alongside positive capital generation, gave us the confidence to announce a dividend payment. Another significant milestone.
Finally, our Green Flag business has expanded its owned and operated patrol coverage in key regions and signed an exciting agreement to provide breakdown services through Apple’s Roadside Assistance via Satellite.
Following the introduction of the FCA’s Consumer Duty rules in 2023, what changes have you made to products and services?
We regularly review the performance of our products to ensure they meet the evolving needs of our customers and to address any issues promptly.
In response to the FCA’s Consumer Duty rules, we’ve made several key updates to improve accessibility and clarity for our customers.
To enhance convenience, we recently launched the Churchill and Direct Line apps, allowing customers to easily access their accounts, manage policies, and initiate claims.
In our home insurance division, we’ve updated our communications and policy wording to ensure customers have a clearer understanding of their coverage.
We are constantly striving to enhance our offering, including analysing data from complaints and repudiated claims to improve how we explain storm cover, helping customers make more informed decisions.
In July, we set out our ambition to become the customers’ insurer of choice. We’re making great strides towards doing just that.
What is your plan to grow the business?
Direct Line Group is well-positioned for growth, leveraging our strong brands, scale and value chain capabilities.
The launch of Direct Line on price comparison websites for motor insurance marks a major evolution of our go to market strategy.
Beyond motor insurance, we’re driving growth in home through product innovation on a newly launched technology platform.
In rescue we’ve enhanced operations with our own fleet of patrol vehicles and expanding distribution through new partnerships.
We are also increasing brand awareness for Green Flag with a targeted marketing campaign, emphasising speed and value, which has already led to rescue-linked sales growth in the second quarter.
We’re also broadening our Commercial Direct division by entering underserved markets, such as expanding tradesperson cover to include premises insurance.
We’re excited by the opportunities ahead and remain committed to executing our growth strategy across all divisions.
