Penny Black’s Social Diary: IQUW’s kitchen; Aon’s sliders

Social Diary

Penny Black is back, sharing the tittle-tattle she overheard at insurance industry events, reviewing the quality of buffets at conferences, and giving a thumbs up – or down – to the sector’s social media posts.

Culture kitchen

For your weekly dose of office envy, today I bring you the wholesome culture kitchen at IQUW, bringing together its London office with games, food and outfits from around the world.

The vibrant clothing rack had elaborate looks from Kurdistan, Ethiopia, Jamaica, Ghana, and several others. I only wish they’d done a fashion show to go along with it.

For food, there was quite an extensive spread, with each continent having its own selections.

I could spot mini vegetable spring rolls representing China, meat samosas for India, coxhinas as Brazil’s cuisine, and puff puff for Nigeria and South Africa, and that’s not even scratching the surface. If I was in attendance, the food section of this column would have been our longest one yet.

Penny Black Aon Sliders

While they now feel far less exciting compared to the selection at IQUW, at the time the beef, fish finger and halloumi sliders served at the Corporate Snakes and Ladders: Revealing the Secrets to Your Next Career Step Dive In event at Aon were truly needed.

After a long day of panel sessions, biting into the sliders was a desirable reward. I’m not ashamed to say I sampled every filling, with a full helping of sweet potato fries to go alongside them. Four stars.

Out of context

“Emma [Hardy, parliamentary under-secretary of state at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs] is not here this evening. She’s had a better day, I shall say that. I’ll tell you later where she’s gone. I’m aware that the address starts with 10, so I think that’s probably quite a good excuse.”

Emma Reynolds, secretary of state for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, reveals her colleague had a better offer than Flood Re’s House of Commons reception to mark the start of Flood Action Week.
