Penny Black’s Social Diary: MS Amlin at Lord’s
Penny Black has been out and about again, notebook in one hand and canapé in the other, keeping a keen eye on the insurance industry’s more whimsical moments.
MS Amlin’s evening out at the cricket
For some going to Lord’s is like going to a north London temple, with the bazaars, merchants and packs of hot-dog eating men wearing classic variants of straw hat, patriotic-coloured blazer, and now, this heatwave summer more than-ever, exposed knees.
The ‘view from the top’ of MS Amlin’s box allowed Penny to peer down below at the sweating masses – as well as paying attention to the game of cricket, of course.
As a commentator not on sport but on insurance socials, it appeared to Penny that if cricket is the religious ritual at Lord’s, then its deity is an insurance denizen, a furry creature.
The Meerkat God of Compare the Market, who is beloved by small children and was very well-known to the underwriters, executives, and media in the MS Amlin box, appeared on the cricket ground’s big screen.
Penny was impressed by MS Amlin’s tastefully decorated box, which hosted dialogue ranging from high-brow literature choices to holiday plans to the latest insurance industry gossip as you would expect when packed with the sector’s press.
Curry hits the sweet spot
Curry may seem like a dangerous choice to present at an early August game of cricket.
But any concerns of the heat were caught by the refreshing dishes, which included thickly cut vegetables with gloopy dollops of avocado and sauce as well as naans and bread.
The never too spicy Indian cuisine was also arguably nicer with a second plate, served by the stadium’s very considerate and attentive waiters.
A well-played food game. Four stars.
Out of context
“It’s only Tuesday and hours of trains delayed or cancelled – cost of tickets refunded, and now flight delayed by two hours, which in British Airways world is worth a £6 refreshment voucher! However, I have put it to good use. Paid for a third of this glass [of wine].”
