Insurance challenge of travelling for treatment

Verisk's Jack Farrall, Compare the Market's Tim Knighton, Gigasure's Gary Murphy and Scott McGee

The growing trend of medical and cosmetic tourism, and the challenge it presents for travel insurers, is the focus of the latest Insurance Post Podcast.

Jack Farrall, head of travel and pet at Verisk, outlines why consumers are heading overseas for treatments and tweakments, as well as highlighting the destinations people are travelling to for dental, cosmetic and weight-loss surgeries.

Tim Knighton, senior commercial manager for travel at Compare the Market, talks about common misunderstandings around what is and isn’t covered when it comes to overseas treatments by traditional travel insurance policies.

“The consumer needs to be very aware if they’ve given full disclosure,” Knighton said.

Gary Murphy, head of travel at Gigasure, said while the declaration process should highlight the kinds of medical treatment that are not covered by traditional policies, Farrall argued more education is needed to ensure full disclosure at the point of sale.

As demand for cover for overseas treatments grows, Murphy reckoned more providers will step into the void to cover the lack of insurers currently offering policies, due to the risk being related to both the individual and the medical provider offering the service.
