Markel president lambasts Lloyd's aviation strategy

Markel president Tony Markel has launched a scathing attack on Lloyd’s recent willingness to accept new aviation capacity. Speaking at the behest of the Insurance Institute of London at Lloyd’s Old Library, he said he had been “appalled at the resigned acceptance of substantial new aviation capacity in a market that seems to be headed toward inadequate pricing”.

Markel decided at the end of 2004 to withdraw from the London aviation market following a defection earlier that year of four people in its team to XL London Market. Since Markel’s exit, however
