Antares CEO Mike van der Straaten passes away

Mike van der Straaten, CEO of Antares, passed away over the weekend following a short illness, a statement from the business has confirmed.

Issued today (13 July), the statement read: “It is with great sadness that we announce that Michael van der Straaten, CEO of Antares, passed away unexpectedly this weekend following a short illness.

“Antares and QIC’s thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences are with Mike’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.

“A further statement will be released in due course.”

Van der Straaten, who was profiled by Insurance Post in 2025, boasted more than 40 years’ experience in the industry, having had a succession of jobs in both London and Cologne for the likes of Europa Re, Cottrell and Maguire, and Omega before joining Ace Tempest (now part of Chubb).

He went on to head up Qatar Insurance Company’s European reinsurance arm and lead its transformation into Antares, where he served as CEO until his passing.
