Throwback Thursday: Lloyd’s ladies; Canada Life’s tech

Throwback Thursday

Insurance Post’s Throwback Thursday steps back in time to July 1970 to remind you what was going on this week in insurance history when Canada Life was going hi-tech and women increased their presence at Lloyd’s.

2 July 1970: Canada Life goes hi-tech

Canada Life announced it was installing “what is believed to be the first private telephone channel for the transmission of computer data between the British Isles and Canada”.

An IBM System/360 model 25 computer was installed by the company in London, linked directly by a line provided by the Post Office Corporation, the Canadian Telecommunication Corporation and Bell Telephone Company to the provider’s offices in Toronto, Canada.

The installation was set to be completed in November and the administration of the provider in the UK would be on a “fully computerised basis” by early 1971, the provider revealed to Post.

Women are coming to Lloyd’s

Post revealed 46 women were elected to Lloyd’s between May 1969 and May 1970.

Many of them were “wives or relatives of existing members, a fact which the [Lloyd’s] report records with satisfaction”, Post noted.
