Why partnerships matter now more than ever
View from the Top: Alex Ktenidis, chief distribution officer for Allianz Commercial, reflects on the British Insurance Brokers’ Association conference and why strong partnerships are like successful marriages.
This year’s Biba marked a personal milestone for me – my first in the role of chief distribution officer.
It also offered a timely moment to reflect on what partnership really means in a market that is changing quickly but still relies on something very simple at its core – people connecting with people.
Partnerships
Biba is now approaching five decades of bringing the market together and has grown in size and significance year after year. In an increasingly complex world, where change hits faster than ever, that continued growth says something important: close connection and strong partnership are not becoming less relevant – they are becoming more critical.
In many ways, strong partnerships are a bit like strong marriages: they work best when both sides show up regularly, invest consistently and do not leave the relationship to drift.
There is no better pulse check on a relationship than seeing the whites of someone’s eyes, and no substitute for sitting across the table from brokers, listening carefully and dealing with issues directly.
Since the days of Lloyd’s Coffee House, the tools of business have evolved, but the value of sitting across the table from someone never has. Biba is a great fixture to speed date across the market, getting a sharper perspective in quick succession.
Although it can serve as a spark for a new relationship or act to refresh one in need of some care, enduring relationships require more.
Marriage
In many ways, strong partnerships are a bit like strong marriages: they work best when both sides show up regularly, invest consistently and do not leave the relationship to drift.
That may be a personal comparison, but it feels a relevant one because trust is built over time, and usually face to face.
The timing also feels particularly relevant. In a soft commercial market, everyone is having to do more with less, and we are seeing brokers become more selective, consolidating around fewer but more impactful relationships.
That raises the bar for all of us. Partnership cannot be passive; it has to be visible, valuable and consistently felt.
It still surprises me how often getting the basics right can be a genuine differentiator in our industry: being accessible, responding quickly, and giving the right answer first time.
Those things matter because they make life easier for brokers and help them spend more time where they add most value – with their clients. If we are serious about putting customers first as an industry, that has to be part of the equation.
Technology
Technology is, of course, a vital part of that.
Seamless digital journeys, smarter tools and faster processes all help remove friction, but my own experience in digital has reinforced a simple lesson – if you can’t get the human part right when support is needed, you lose overall. That becomes even more important as risks grow more complex.
The best innovation is collaborative, and there is a particular spark created when people come together, challenge each other, and move ideas forward in the room.
That is also why access matters so much. Brokers and insurers have a symbiotic relationship, and trust within that relationship is deeply personal.
Building it takes regular investment, consistency and presence. Long-established local presence, alongside the continued growth of regional access across the market, remains a strong signal of commitment because it shows brokers can reach the right people who understand them and their customers.
Events such as Biba also remind us that strong relationships are not just about tackling big issues head on, but about taking the time to celebrate successes too. Both are easier, and often more meaningful, in person. And while there are only three givens in life – death, taxes and insurance cycles – one constant is that as markets inevitably harden, relationships matter even more.
For me, that is the enduring lesson from this year’s Biba. Progress will come from combining strong personal relationships with smarter, faster innovation cycles across our market.
If we can keep investing in both, giving brokers better support, better access and more time with clients, we will build partnerships that are not only more resilient, but more effective for the customers we all ultimately serve.
