How insurers can support farmers facing mental strain
The latest Insurance Post Podcast explores the growing mental health challenges facing the UK farming community and the role insurers, brokers and loss adjusters can play in supporting vulnerable customers.
Chris Hurst, director of agriculture at Intact, and Alan Tate-Smith, founder of AMB Rural and Commercial, kick off the discussion by outlining the financial, regulatory and emotional pressures currently weighing on the minds of farmers.
Nicole Caine, customer enhancement service adviser at Crawford & Company, explains the signs and red flags to look out for that may suggest a farmer is struggling with their mental health, while Bryn Thomas, partner in the agriculture and estates team at HCR Law, discusses how insurance professionals can create a safe space for farmers to share concerns and, where appropriate, encourage them to seek support.
“Farmers, it’s not just a job for them, it is an identity,” said Caine. “It is important someone on the other end understands that. It is about making connections, and our farmers are aware of what support is out there.”
The panel also discusses the importance of checking in regularly, listening empathetically, and signposting individuals towards organisations and support services in a way that encourages engagement.
