The debate about the personal injury discount rate in Northern Ireland is a combination of big political forces, small political points-scoring and, perhaps, some missed opportunities, argue BLM director Alistair Kinley and partner Patrick Connolly, Forum of Insurance Lawyers members.

The big picture is that the notional legal rate in Northern Ireland until this May had remained at 2.5% – set way back in 2001 – because for three years we didn’t have an Executive capable of changing
