Penny Black's Insurance Week - 24 October 2013

New Aviva UK general insurance boss Maurice Tulloch has certainly made an impression on his new staff, and Penny hears the Norwich-based insurer’s head honcho has already attended a football match.

Aviva’s leaders certainly have form in this area: Mark Hodges is known to remain a big fan of Aviva-sponsored Norwich City, despite having left the parish for Towergate in 2011. But, in a bold choice, Tulloch acclimatised himself with a trip not to Norwich’s own Carrow Road, but to hated rivals Ipswich Town instead. There is no love lost between the Tractor Boys and the Canaries, so Tulloch had best hope he can recoup some brownie points elsewhere.

Meanwhile, although Halloween is almost upon us, Penny wasn’t expecting to be confronted with an early visit from a member of another realm last week, while enjoying a tipple with LV’s Michael Lawrence. Mid-conversation, Lawrence exclaimed that his glass had mysteriously scooted across the table. Calls for a spirit level followed, apps were downloaded, and the table was discovered to be steady as a rock. With Lawrence convinced the glass moving was the work of a thirsty ghost, Penny wondered if a different kind of spirit level might have been more helpful...
