Liberty Mutual Q3 profit dwindles after catastrophe, investment losses take toll

Liberty Mutual has said net income fell $6m and $666m for the three and nine months ended 30 September, respectively, compared to $404m and $1.09bn in the same periods in 2007.

“Given the circumstances, we are pleased with our results in the third quarter,” said Edmund Kelly, Liberty's chairman, president and CEO. “We absorbed over $800m of pre-tax natural catastrophe losses
