Recession officially hits UK
The UK is expected to be officially declared in recession after gross domestic product fell by 1.5% in the final quarter of 2008, which followed a 0.6% drop in the previous quarter, according to analysts.
National output data today is expected to show the biggest quarter-on-quarter decline since 1980 and to confirm that recession has hit the UK for the first time in 20 years.
