Liberty Specialty Markets employees have selected Water Aid’s Madagascar project as their specific programme from among the organisation’s initiatives in 26 countries following the announcement of the company’s partnership with the leading international charity.

Madagascar is an island off the southeast coast of Africa and is home to 10.9 million people without access to clean water, over 12 million without adequate sanitation, and 4000 children die every year from illness caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation.

LSM aims to donate a significant sum over three years to the charity, specifically supporting the initiative in Madagascar, which aims to provide all rural communities with safe water, toilets and hygiene education. Acting as part of LSM’s corporate social responsibility programme, staff will also undertake a range of fundraising activities as well as volunteering to support the charity.

Nick Metcalf, president and managing director of LSM, said: “It is astounding that 10.9 million people don’t have access to what here in the UK we take completely for granted. We hope that we can really make a difference to the lives of the people living in Madagascar.”
