View from the top: My showbiz life
It’s all go when you’re in demand, so Christmas is the perfect time of year to paws for thought and to reflect on the events of the past year.
Back in blustery January and February, I was treading the boards in pantomimes up and down the country, from Cardiff to Glasgow and Portsmouth to Newcastle. Oh yes I did! It was great fun catching up with some of my celebrity chums as I graced the stage with those grand dames Christopher Biggins, Bobby Davro and Strictly Come Dancing’s Craig Revel Horwood. I wonder who would play the ugly sisters in the Post staff pantomime?
In the Spring, I was invited up to Ipswich to meet those courageous canines at the National Police Dog Trials. It’s certainly not a dog’s life for these boisterous fellows as they are constantly on the go, helping to keep our streets and our property safe.
As well as using my A-list celebrity status to help public services, I teamed up with Battersea Dogs and Cats Home to help raise money at its annual reunion this summer. My Churchill team set up camp at the family fun day in Battersea Park and I met with hundreds of ex-Battersea dogs and their new owners. I even challenged the Home’s mascots Bat and Zee to an obstacle course challenge but, unfortunately, I may have eaten a few too many sausages, as they pipped me to the post.
Over the past few months I’ve been out and about supporting Brake, the road safety charity’s, Beep Beep! Day project. Every year, thousands of children under seven take part in this special day organised by their nursery or playgroup to learn about road safety through fun activities, while raising funds for families bereaved by road crashes. I dropped into a Beep Beep! Day at a nursery in Halifax to see the great work the team gets up to.
As the year comes to a close, I’ve been busy on set — at a top secret location naturally — filming my new TV advertising campaign for 2012. I’m joined on screen by a new chum who’ll be co-starring in the adverts with me. But who is it? You’ll just have to keep your eyes peeled over the festive season to find out!
