Brit Insurance this week summoned former Zurich Commercial boss Peter Burrows to the crease to lead its attack on the UK regions.

This could prove something of a coup for Brit, given that Mr Burrows previously worked in the higher echelons of two of the largest five commercial players in the UK: Royal and Sun Alliance and Zurich.

Post Magazine's rundown of the top 100 UK general insurers, compiled in conjunction with AM Best, last year showed the progress Brit had made, elevating itself into the top 20 largest UK insurance groups for the first time (PM, 8 September 2005, p1).

Now group chief executive Dane Douteil is talking of moving up a gear and he sees Mr Burrows as the person to do that, given his previous experience managing and growing much larger commercial operations.

Could Brit gatecrash the top 10 in the foreseeable future? Much will depend on the consolidation of those around it because having steadfastly ignored its pro-merger broker in the past, the insurer seems keen to get results organically.
