Your readers should be in no doubt about the Association of British Insurers' continued commitment to securing wins for the general insurance industry ('Room for lobbying improvement', PM, 14 October, p13).

PM rightly acknowledges our work on flooding, where the government has publicly stated that sustained spending on flood defences remains a priority; and employers' liability, where ministers have confirmed to us their commitment to work towards solutions.

However, the ABI's wider work includes climate change; ensuring that the forthcoming regulation of general insurance strikes the right balance between consumer protection and market innovation; reforming Pool Re; or avoiding the proposed £3 levy on household insurance - the list goes on.

On tackling the funding of rising compensation claims, we are actively seeking solutions and exploring ideas with all interested parties, including developing better rehabilitation services, and reducing legal costs. On the issue of uninsured driving, many of the recommendations made in the Greenaway Report, which has been endorsed by the government, reflect what the ABI has, for some time, been calling for.

The ABI remains alert to potential challenges and threats to the general insurance market. Across the board, the government recognises the ABI as a heavyweight, actively seeking our views and acting on them.

Jane Milne

Acting head of general insurance, Association of British Insurers.
