Penny Black's Insurance Week - 10 July 2014

Penny is a firm believer in self-congratulation – why shouldn’t one be rewarded with a piece of dark-chocolate brownie topped with crème fraiche for taking the stairs instead of the lift?

However, she has never gone as far as A-Plan chief executive Carl Shuker, who not only treated himself to a new watch on his 30-year anniversary at the high-street broker but also had it engraved with a personal message addressed to himself, from himself. Puzzled by the curious missive, the engraver reportedly rang Shuker to make sure he hadn’t made a mistake. Meanwhile, Penny is no soap addict (she’s more of a wrestling fan) but she was thrilled to hear that the boys and girls at the British Insurance Brokers’ Association have been chipping in to help out Eastenders. The long-running BBC show recruited the team to ask a question on coverage for an upcoming episode – would a house fire started by a carelessly discarded cigarette be covered if it ignited via some industrial hair products? Executive director Graeme Trudgill was last seen disappearing over the horizon to give his answer to Aunty. Penny isn’t sure – so answers on a postcard!
