Career development: Insurers battling apprenticeship ignorance

More than a quarter of insurance companies are planning apprenticeship schemes for 2013, but 76% of young people are unaware of such options, according to research from Barclays.

The bank said that just over half of young people would consider apprenticeships, but awareness of new qualifications in insurance was lower than knowledge of options in other industries.

A quarter said they knew of options in healthcare, while 33% reported the same for the travel industry, 44% for retail, and 69% for manufacturing.

The number of schemes available in insurance compares to opportunities with 44% of health and leisure firms, 40% of the transport and logistics industry and 31% of the legal sector.

Barclays head of employability programmes Mike Thompson said: "It is vital young people are aware of all the opportunities open to them. Businesses and educators need to work together to ensure young people know what is on offer, and how to access it. This ensures businesses have an opportunity to bring in promising young talent but, just as importantly, it ensures no young person feels they are left without options."
