Driverless vehicles have until recently been the stuff of scary fiction – from Stephen Spielberg’s menacing apparently driverless truck in the cult 1970s film Duel, to Stephen King’s demonic Chevrolet in Christine.

But this is all about to change. The government’s recent announcement that driverless cars will be allowed on public roads from January next year means that, within our lifetimes, fully autonomous
