This week’s issue is a bumper BIA edition, containing all the news, winners and photos from the 20th anniversary British Insurance Awards. With entertainment from 80s pop veterans ABC and comedian Bill Bailey performing a reggae rendition of the Downton Abbey theme to an emotionally-charged acceptance speech from Achievement Award winner Barry Smith, the awards once again failed to disappoint.

“I’m honoured to be awarded this accolade in what was a truly humbling experience, especially at such a prestigious occasion,” said Ageas COO Smith. “Achievement is down to teams and I am so fortunate to have worked with some great people and their support and commitment is the drive that brings about our and my success.”

In the news, brokers warn about the impact of renewal transparency plans on direct insurers, as the Association of British Insurers asks the Financial Conduct Authority to enforce minimum standards of information; motor insurers are warned they may face increased scrutiny following the discovery that some brands are arranging monthly premium payments regardless of policyholder preference; a Grant Thornton survey finds that small firms are struggling to be ready for Solvency II despite repeated delays; general insurance firms are urged to adopt whistleblowing policies as an FCA review is mooted; and a survey from accountancy firm PKF Littlejohn reveals conduct is the most concerning emerging risk for London market internal auditors.

Covéa Insurance’s Carol Geldard is in the C-Suite; the marketing and communications director talks up working in the industry, arguing a proud workforce can see a business flourish. And Carly Stewart comments in North of the Border; the Simpson & Marwick associate bemoans the fact that the disparity in the value of bereavement claims north and south of the border continues to widen.

Finally, this week’s interview sees Callum Brodie talking to Zurich’s interim UK general insurance CEO David Smith and his management team. He explains how at a firm where stability is a watchword, his strategy will ensure the division stays on course for growth.
